Thank you to everyone who donated over the year - we could not have done it without your continued support and generousity!

Throughout the last year we have participated in a number of fundraising activities.  Our aim was to raise at least £10,000 towards The Beatson Pebble Appeal, which we have achieved!

Events throughout the year include a 5k and 10k Run for Fun day, Zip Slide across the Clyde, abseiling down the Falkirk wheel, dress down Fridays and pub quiz nights.

We recently handed over the £10,000 cheque to The Beatson, which they were delighted with.  We will follow the work they are doing and continue to support them in any way we can.  The money we donated is going towards their new centre which is currently under development.  We will continue to follow this development and keep you up to date with any news from The Beatson.

We thank you for all the support you have contributed over the year.

"The Beatson is delighted that Abercrombie Gemmell raised so much money for the appeal, we are so thrilled with the efforts the company made to raise this money, and are delighted with the result, without donations we wouldn't be able to be in the position to develop the new centre, thank you so much". Laura Morton, The Beatson.

For those of you who haven’t heard of The Beatson Pebble Appeal, in summer 2007 the University of Glasgow launched a £10m fundraising campaign to build The Beatson Translational Research Centre (TRC) at Garscube – the final element in the creation of the Glasgow Centre for Cancer Research.  The University is developing this centre jointly with The Beatson Institute, Cancer Research UK and Greater Glasgow & Clyde Health Board.  It will be the largest comprehensive cancer care centre in Scotland & one of the largest in the UK.

The Beatson TRC aims to convert basic cancer research into real improvements in treatments for patients.  It will focus upon especially common tumours, those that cause the most deaths in Scotland.

Sadly, every day 54 people are diagnosed with cancer in the West of Scotland – that amounts to over 27,000 people a year – 10,000 of whom live in Glasgow.  Glasgow has the unenviable title of the cancer capital of Europe.  Despite the considerable improvements in the treatment of some cancers, 11 people die of cancer every day in Scotland.

Cancer affects so many people from all walks of life that anything that can be done to aid the fight to treat cancer is vitally important.  The idea behind The Beatson Pebble Appeal is simple – if we all give a little we can make a big difference.  Simply add one small pebble to another and another and watch the pile grow.
